Description

Juan de Dios Peza (1852-1910) was read and recited across the Spanish-speaking world for his domestic verse, which makes it easy to forget that he also worked as a public servant and wrote this careful account of Mexican charitable institutions. It goes establishment by establishment — hospitals, asylums, foundling homes, schools — with their origins, their means and what they were actually able to do. Charity was then the whole of what a state offered its poorest, so a survey of it is a survey of the social provision of the republic, written by someone who could make an inventory readable. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1881 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
