Description

Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna (1831-1886) wrote history at a pace that embarrassed his contemporaries and then, in 1872, became intendant of Santiago and set about remaking the city he had just finished describing — draining it, paving it, and turning the bare rock of Santa Lucía into the terraced park that still carries his mark. This general guide belongs to the moment before that. It records the streets, buildings, institutions and trades of Santiago as they stood, which makes it both a practical handbook of its year and the baseline against which the transformation that followed can be measured. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1872 Santiago de Chile edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
