Description
Gaspar de Quiroga, Cardinal, Archbishop of Toledo and Inquisitor General, issued this Index in 1583 with the Supreme Council of the Inquisition. It is the working instrument rather than a commentary on one: the books, the authors and the passages that were not to be read in Spain, set out for the men who had to enforce it. Read today it is a negative catalogue of the sixteenth century — much of what a period thought dangerous is precisely what it thought important, and the Index preserves the judgement in the sharpest possible form. It is also, incidentally, a bibliography of works whose existence is otherwise poorly recorded. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1583 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
