Description
What better way to give children a voice than through lived experiences. I am not a professional and I do no have all the answers and I still struggle some days now. However I experienced hard moments. Saw or heard things beyond my years and not speaking out or even knowing that was an option meant I had to relive it and deal with it many years later. This has hurt me deeply. Holding on to things or feeling others will judge or you do not have the words needs to change for the younger generation. Asking for help for yourselves or others. Admitting that life is hard and is not always perfect. Knowing that mental health ie an illness not a flaw or weakness and it impacts others around you- needs to be taught and discussed.
Vol 4, adapted for Children (to be used and led by an adult) is part of a 4 part collection. Vol 1 to 3 is not designed to be shown to children as they include adult content however Vol 4 is designed specifically for children and implemented by teachers, parents and other professionals. The message is the same - have a voice- ask for help.
Children often carry adult worries. Between family stress, big feelings, and everyday pressures, they quietly take things in, somethings were never meant for them. The world is changing, so our way to talk about issues and mental health needs to change too. Things are becoming harder. The world is sometimes too busy to fully listen or children do not have the words to explain their feelings or know when to share and when to and with who.
I wrote The Waterproof Mind because children deserve simple, safe ways to let stress roll right off their backs and to understand why to ask for help and how to help themselves.
People can always help but you yourself need to deal with your own feelings and children as well as adults need to learn how to regulate and how to share. How to ask for help and why.
It is a gentle, practical toolkit filled with powerful animal metaphors, like a duck's natural preen gland, that teaches children how to scale their worries, protect their peace, and hand adult-sized problems back to the adults who they belong to them.
It teaches resilience, emotional literacy and tries to open a door to communication and feelings.
It builds character and understanding!
Seven lesson ideas and key sayings and take aways.
Weather, clouds, 20 degrees and 340, V Formation, Preen Gland, Ducks and more !..
Quotes-
"Feelings are visitors. They come. They stay for a while. Then they move on. I do not have to stay stuck in one kind of weather."
"Children should never be expected to carry adult-sized worries. They need trusted adults, practical tools and simple ways of understanding their emotions."
"A Waterproof Mind is not about never feeling worried. It is about knowing that help, hope and support are always available."
"Strong people ask for help. Strong people help others. We all fly better together."
Author Biography:
Ms. Taylor is an author, lyricist and multidisciplinary creator dedicated to transforming personal trauma, grief, and life challenges into a public toolkit for healing and resilience. Following the passing of her mum and years of witnessing cycles of depression and loss, she channeled her journey into the four-volume series, Giving Myself My Voice Back!.
Her works have earned high praise from IndieReader, which hailed Volume 1 as an "open-hearted, vulnerable, and compassionate awakening which would resonate with others witnessing loved ones with mental health issues", noting it as a profound reclamation of personal power. Volume 2 (Like a Duck!) was similarly commended as a practical guide blending poetry, memoir, and workbook elements, praised for offering an accessible style that helps readers navigate life's challenges, recast bad days through clever metaphors, and make a quietly bold case for retiring the word "abuse" in favour of "Emotional Bystander".
Her writing from the Online Book Club is described as "There are two aspects I truly enjoyed. The first was when she acknowledged her husband and her father. It reminded me that even in the midst of hurt, we should celebrate the people who love us. Another thing I liked was the handbacks and the keepers and how she encouraged me to make it a habit to hand back things that weren’t in my control and keep only the good and the lessons learned. Overall, this was a very emotional and engaging book. The style of writing is unique, and I could totally empathize with the author even though I haven’t met her. That, to me, is the power of words."
Bridging memoir, self-help, and education, her series provides a comprehensive roadmap for anyone navigating complex grief and family stress. Beyond the page, Ms. Taylor’s project extends into music as a songwriter with 21 original songs streaming on Spotify and Apple Music (featured in Vol. 3: Love Always Project- Online as Love Always Ms Taylor), as well as educational resources and PHSE lesson adaptations designed to build emotional literacy in children and young adults.
Commitment:
Entered into several music and indie author contest for 2027 to show dedication to her Mum and to mental health and others. Also to show her Mum "I believe you. My Voice matters and my writing is good. It only takes one voice to make a difference."
