Description

The Guadalquivir flooded Seville in the last days of 1783, and Cándido María Trigueros (1736-1801) published his account of it in 1784 — close enough to the event that the detail is reported rather than imagined. Writing a disaster in verse was then the natural thing to do: the poem was how news acquired shape and weight, and Trigueros gives the rising water, the quarters lost and the response of the city in a form his readers would have taken as both testimony and literature. It is a first-hand record of an eighteenth-century urban flood, in the register its own time chose for it. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1784 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
