Description

Francisco Martorell y Peña (1822-1878) collected antiquities, excavated, and left his collection and his fortune to Barcelona, where they became the city's first archaeological museum. These notes, edited after his death by Salvador Sanpere y Miquel, are the working record behind the collection: sites visited, objects described, inscriptions copied. Nineteenth-century field notes are often the only account of contexts that were destroyed soon after, and they show a discipline being assembled by men who had to invent their own methods as they went. With a portrait frontispiece. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1879 Barcelona edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
