Description

Smallpox killed on a scale that is hard to hold in mind now, and in 1774 there was no vaccine — Jenner was twenty-five and had not yet done his experiment. What could be done was management: the regimen, the room, the diet, when to intervene and when not to. Joseph Amar wrote his instruction for the faculty and then, pointedly, adapted it for everyone, because in most of Spain the person at the bedside would not be a physician. Medical writing addressed over the profession's head to the household is rarer than it sounds, and it tells you what the author thought the emergency was worth. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1774 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
