Description

Fray Jerónimo de San José (1587-1654) wrote the Genio de la historia to settle what a historian owes: to the truth, to the reader, to the dead. It is one of the earliest sustained treatments of historical method in Spanish — what counts as evidence, how to weigh a witness, when eloquence serves the account and when it corrupts it — and it was written by a man who had done the work himself, as chronicler of his order. Reprinted in 1768, a century after his death, because the questions had not gone away. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1768 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
