I recently retired after about 40 years as a journalist, working for Reuters, Associated Press, Agence France Presse, BBC and the Guardian newspaper among others.
I live in Jerusalem but was born and grew up in the UK.
"Put Me Down I'm British is my first book but I have other writing projects in mind.
The book tells of my encounters with three Nobel Peace Prize laureates along with author Salman Rushdie, the queen of Denmark and some surprisingly amiable (toward me) cannibal guerrillas in the hills of northern Liberia.
There is the tragedy of starving children in Africa and of young lives cut short in the biker gang wars of Denmark and there's the absurdity of having a bayonet wound treated by a gynaecologist who told me that it would be easier to get at the spot if I put my feet in the stirrups.
It was the last gasp of an era in which news organisations were still run by newsmen and women who had budgets and were prepared to pay for an inquisitive reporter's journeys off the beaten track. That's no longer the case; it's the accountants who call the shots now. The foreign editor of a British daily paper told me over lunch a couple of years ago that he was only able to dispatch writers to destinations served by easyJet. How sad - but how fortunate I was to get on board just in time.
"Put Me Down I'm British" is a salute, in an era of dodgy online "news" to the much-maligned traditional media and their staffs of commited, professional reporters and editors. To rigorous fact-checking and commitment to fairness and balance.
