Description

Shrewsbury was built on wool, and its historic buildings provide evidence of the wealth generated by wool merchants over past centuries. This colourful illustrated book explores aspects of the history of some of the families of those merchants and some of the major issues they faced. They are known to locals and visitors alike as they have given their names to many buildings in the town including Rowley`s Mansion, Jones`s Mansion, Prowde`s Mansion, Perche`s Mansion, Bennett`s Hall, and Drapers` Hall.
Trade was not always profitable and the merchants were faced by many major issues over the centuries. Including the Welsh wars, the Reformation, the English Civil War and wars against France and Spain, when goods were confiscated, stolen or lost at sea.
The Industrial Revolution and the reforms of the 1830s saw the end of the wool merchants’ monopoly on the trade, but their charitable work continued and the Shrewsbury Drapers have provided social housing almost continuously since 1444 to the present day. This illustrated story uncovers
many aspects of the merchant drapers - and their volunteer successors today.
