Description

Joaquín de Castellarnau was a forestry engineer and one of Spain's finest microscopists — Cajal used his optical advice. These notes ask the question every microscopist must answer and few write down: under what conditions is the image true? Diffraction, illumination, the limits of resolution and the artefacts of preparation all conspire to show you things that are not in the specimen. Written the decade Cajal was beginning to see neurons, it is a careful statement of what an instrument can and cannot testify to. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1885 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
