What has been said involves a confession. We do not care so much that the pupil''s progress should be rapid, as that it should be thorough in every respect. We have therefore treated the early groundwork copiously and elaborately. Experience has taught us that careless ness with regard to the first position is exactly that fault which is attended by the most serious results. This must therefore be avoided in the interest of the master as well as of the pupil. Whoever is of the opinion that a prolonged study of the elementary part of violin-playing must damp the pupil''s enthusiasm, makes a fatal mistake. What distinguishes the able teacher from the mere mechanical lesson-giver is, that in addition to the necessary patience and love of his work, he must possess sufficient intelligence to keep his pupil''s interest alive even during the painful process of trying to grasp serious subjects.
