Die Stechmücken haben seit einiger Zeit durch ihre praktische Bedeutung große Beachtung und zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen auf sich gezogen Vor allem ist es ihre Eigenschaft als Überträger von Seuchen, die den Hygieniker, besonders in den Tropen, zu eingehender Beschäftigung mit diesen Plagegeistern zwingt. Denn die meisten'' von Mücken übertragenen Krankheiten, so Gelbfieber, Filariasis und Dengue, gehören warmem Klima an, und die Malaria hat in unseren Breiten nicht annähernd die Bedeutung, wie in den Tropen.
