Nikl does not believe in religion, the supernatural or magic. She is a realist, and she has to be.
Nikl is a Jack. Occasional assassin, thief, spy. Vital to the secretive workings of the city and preventing open warfare between factions that would burn the city to the ground.
It's happened before, and it could happen again.
Flotsam City.
A makeshift wooden city clinging to the sides of a 5km square, 30km tall monolith in the middle of an ocean. Makeshift, other than the fact that it has been there for more than forty centuries, and nobody knows why. Makeshift, and if you believe the townships who have hired her to find the legendary Diary of Renzo Gui, starting to fail.
The past is special. Personal. When Nikl got the chance to steal back a treasure lost from her family a century before, she jumped at the chance. Only, she did not count on an inanimate object - a supposedly magical artefact - waking up to tell her that she was a martyr, a death bringer and a saviour of all human kind.
Her past is not what she thought. And neither is her present.
In a feudal world starting to break, Nikl needs to find the diary, the keys, break into a monolith that has been sealed for four-thousand years and somehow avoid the machinations of those who would stop her.
Tree and Keys is a science-fiction / fantasy / ecofiction adventure for general audiences. The Flotsam City series is part of the Liturgy of the Sisterhood source world, dealing with humankind's interactions with a changing climate and technology that may to some seem like magic.
