Description
Excerpt from Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa: From the Journal of an Expedition Undertaken Under the Auspices of H. B. M. ''S Government, in the Years 1849-1855
During my three. Years'' travelling I had ample opportunity of testing the efiicacy of British protection; I experienced the kindness of all her Britannic majesty''s consuls from Tangiers to Brusa, and often'' enjoyed their hospitality. It was solely their protection which enabled me to traverse with some degree of security those more desert tracts through which I wandered. Colonel Warringto''n, her majesty''s co''nsul in Tripoli, who seems to have had some presentiment of my capabilities as an African explorer, ''even promised me his full assistance if I should try to penetrate into the interior. Besides this my admiration of the wide extension of the British over the globe, their in?uence, their language, and their government, was such that I felta strong inclination to become the humble means of carrying out their philanthropic views for the progressive, civilization of the neglected races of Central Africa.
