Description
For thirty years Francois Broussais dominated European medicine with a single idea: nearly all disease is inflammation of the digestive tract, and nearly all treatment is therefore antiphlogistic — diet, rest, and leeches in enormous numbers. France imported thirty million leeches a year at the peak. He was wrong, and the harm was considerable; he was also the man who insisted that disease must be sought in tissue lesions rather than in humoral abstractions, which was the future. This Spanish translation shows the doctrine arriving where it would be argued over for another generation.
