Description

Excerpt from Toward Freedom for All: North Carolina Quakers and Slavery

In 1896, Stephen B. Weeks published his widely acclaimed Southern Quakers and Slavery, a work bearing the official approval of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends. Weeks' copy of this book, now in the Southern Historical Collection of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, reveals that the origi nal title was: The Quakers in Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia and their Settle ment in the Middle West. This title is more appropriate than the one chosen for publication, for only one chapter is devoted to the slavery question. 1 have chosen a more restricted topic than either of those selected by Weeks, limiting myself to the dealings of North Carolina Friends with slavery.
