Tacitus tells us also how Nero, accused of having set fire to the city of Rome, turned aside the anger of the people by saying that the fires had been started by the Christians. A vast multitude were convicted, he writes.
In their deaths they were made the subjects of sport, for they were covered with the hides of wild beasts and worried to death by dogs or nailed to crosses or set fire to and burned to serve as lights at night. Nero offered his own gardens for this exhibition.
