In any structure containing air spaces, there are three mechanisms of heat transfer: Con duction, radiation, and convection of the air. Typical insulation has very small spaces containing air or some other gas. Here, convection and radiation are minimized, but conduction employs parallel paths through the gas and through the solid lattice between cells.
