Description
Malen was out of breath, she saw. One hand was at the Old woman''s side; the other held a bundle of clothes, strung together with a lace, which she now let slide to the grass. She held up this hand as if to beg a moment in which to recover breath. Evidently she was not merely sent from the house to recall the Maid of rhos, who had escaped her task of early spinning to ride out and play truant. And indeed, Malen, though a familiar spirit at rhos, was not an inmate of the house. Her own cot was at the waterside, a mile above, whence she went journeying all the country over, selling pins and charms, doing good turns and getting an evil name for them.
