The preparation of the following work was first suggested to me in the year 1846. In the early part of that year, it was my happiness to be placed in the midst of a revival of religion of no ordinary interest. Both during the revival and afterwards, I was frequently called upon to converse with those that were asking The Way to Christ. I then felt, as often before, the need of a manual for inquirers, di?''erent in some important respects from those that I had been accustomed to use. Some of these possessed great and acknowledged merits; but none met, precisely, the want. The preparation of the following work was therefore undertaken. The general plan was marked out, and a consider able portion of it completed, when a press of public duties compelled me to lay it aside.
