Description
It must not be forgotten that it was in beautiful Wexford that the death-struggle of 1798 between Loyalist and Rebel was specially characterised by that ferocity and vindictiveness which only spring from an intensity of religious feeling. As far as Wex ford was concerned, it was nothing less than the jihad, or Holy War of the Roman Catholics of the South against the Protestants and their protectors. No quarter was asked for, given, or expected. Hence the outrages which make men Shudder after the lapse of more than a century.
