Per square inch, and the factor of safety in the design of the engines is io. The maximum speed attained by the pistons is about 700 feet per minute, when the engine makes 50 revolutions per minute. The engines are designed for raising 80 cwts. Of net coal from a depth of 700 yards; and the gross load lifted, including 5% tons of rope, is about 12 tons. Steam of 80 lbs. Pressure per square inch is supplied from four Lancashire boilers, 7 feet in diameter, 30 feet long.
