Description
Excerpt from The Seas and Shores of England
Guide-books to all parts of England, Scotland, and Wales multiply in these days; and the corner of England - the extreme West Country - to which I happen to belong - would seem to invite its fair proportion of the swarm, to say the least of it. Some of these do great credit to their compilers, mapping out routes for pedestrians and motorists, with distances, objects of interest, architectural details of the churches, and just enough of geology or archaeology to be noted and talked about when the more curious visitor gets home. Others will take him along breezily, gossiping, advertising the town-dweller, be he motorist or hiker or invalid, that our seaside resorts provide for him a blend of natural beauty and ozone which at once braces the body and medicinally relaxes the mind with its cares; promises which, of course, are quite com patible. Others again advise concerning hotels, lodging-houses, entertainments, beaches, ways in which wise parents can get through the school holidays to best advantage.
