Description
The lesson for this day, the sixth Sunday after Epiphany, is taken from the first Epistle of St. Paul to the Thessalonians. Thessalonica was not only the capital, but also one of the most renowned and opulent cities of Macedonia. Its inhabitants were composed of Greeks, Romans, Jews, and Pagans. St. Paul preached the gospel in this city with great success. But the nu believing Jews, envying his success, raised such a commotion against him that he was obliged to quit the city. He then went to the very cradle Of art and science and preached in the Areo pagus of Athens. Hearing that his converts in Thessalonica had been undergoing a severe persecution ever since his departure.
