On a rainy afternoon, a bored little princess climbs a forbidden staircase and finds a secret that will change her life.
Eight-year-old Irene lives in a great old house, half castle and half farmhouse, high on a mountainside. Beneath her feet the mountain is full of mines and caverns. In the darkness below lives a race of goblins who have held a grudge against her royal family for generations. Her guardians fear them so much that Irene has never once seen the stars at night.
One wet day, while her nurse's back is turned, Irene slips through a door to a worm-eaten oak stair she has never been allowed to explore. Lost among corridors of closed doors, she stumbles into the most important meeting of her life. Deep under the mountain, meanwhile, a brave young miner's boy begins to learn what the goblins are planning.
