Cotton Mather was a writer of excellent quality; he could tell a story vastly better than most men can, and he was not above writing in the vernacular when inspired by the spectacle of action. He is usually thought of as a man of the study, the author of a long list of formidable books and the possessor of New England''s greatest library. But it is in the real world that the life of Phips takes place. The story of the treasure hunt, good of course in itself, becomes better by this handling; and so do the stories of the wars and of the mutiny which the Knight of Maine put down. Everywhere in the writ ing there is vigor - the rich, allusive vigor of seventeenth-century prose.
