Description
When the poet Coleridge was on a visit to Manchester he attended a gather ing of the Literary and Philosophical Society, and Owen had the courage to enter into public debate with him. This encounter gained for him the title of the ''reasoning machine.'' Long afterwards, when again they met, Coleridge reminded Owen of this encounter, and remarked that though he (coleridge) had on his side ?uency and oratorical accomplishments, Owen had certainly on his side what was more desirable - reason.
