The nearest attempt in the way of collecting materials for such a biography of this eminent man is found in the admirable work, Wort/156.9 of All Souls, written by Mr. Montagu Burrows, sometime Chichele Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford, which was published by Messrs. Macmillan 8: co. In the year 1874. As a Fellow Of all Souls, the College of which Sheldon was successively Fellow and Master until his expulsion at the Great Rebellion, Mr. Burrows naturally wrote of Sheldon with reverence and appreciation, and, as far as I am able to judge, with impartiality. To his Wort/lies of A Z! Souls I am greatly indebted for information upon certain periods of Sheldon's career. My autho rity for the historical statements made in the earliest pages Of this work is Anthony 21 Wood's Aikaw Oxoniemes, second edition, corrected and enlarged, Lond., 1721, vol. Ii.
