T HE present treatise is written with the purpose of calling attention to a field of historical material seldom examined. It aims. To emphasize the results for the mother land of the discovery, exploration, settlement and occupation by the English iof areas beyond the confines of Europe. It is further intended to be a systematic résumé of the essential respects in which the Englishman''s characteristics and cir cumstances were altered. Just as the work of expansion into America, Asia, Africa and other parts of the earth carried with it European ideas, institutions and commodities to be implanted in new environments, so too it brought back ideas, institutions and commodities, derived from contact with non-european lands and peoples, which affected Euro pean life and thought to a greater or less degree.
