In their original shape, these Arthurian stories were purely Pagan in spirit, but when they reappear in the dress accorded to them by the romance writers of the twelfth century, we find they have already been so completely appropriated by the exponents of Christianity, and their original characteristics so entirely transformed, that they can no longer be considered apart from ideas which had their origin in the teaching of the church.
