Commenced originally with but little idea of publication, I may not have been as careful as I ought in quoting the sources of some of my information; but I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. Tregellas, the author of Cornish Worthies to Mr. Robbins, the author of Sir Bevil Grenvill, the Knight of the West, a Biography in outline to Mr Cotton, the author of Barnstaple during the Civil War; to Mr. Julian Corbett for much relating to George Monk, Duke of Albemarle, which I have taken from his life of that chief actor in the Restoration in the English Men of Action Series and last, but not least, to Mrs. G. H. Radford, whose amusing account of the quarrels between Sir Richard Granville, the King''s General in the West, and his wife forms one of the papers in the Transactions of the Devonshire Association for 1890.
