The emigration westward at this time was very great. The com mander at Fort Harmer, at the mouth of the Muskingum, reported four thousand five hundred persons as having passed that post between Feb roary and June, 1788 - many of whom would have purchased of the Associates, as the New England Company was called, had they been ready to receive them.
