Description
The heraldry of the Clan Mackenzie is interesting as an example of a sovereign''s grateful recognition, or heraldic com memoration of loyal services to his sacred person, The legend is one of the best known in Scotland and has often appeared in print, and has been perpetuated by that great academician Benjamin West, in his noble painting, Ale wander Ill, King of Scotland, lxesened from the l ury of a Stag, for uhich he is said to have received from the last liarl of Seaforth £800. The painting now hangs in Brahan Castle, Ross shire, the seat of the Mackenzies. The illustration accompanying this article is from a large proof engraving by F. Bartolozzi dated 1784.
