Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) was an American poet and early performance artist, considered the father of modern 'singing poetry,' in which verses are meant to be sung or chanted. His extensive correspondence with Yeats details his intentions to revive the musical qualities in poetry practiced by the ancient Greeks. The was known in the 1910s as the 'Prairie Troubadour' due to his use of American Midwest themes, From 1910 until his death, Lindsay was one of the best-known poets in the U.S.
