Excerpt from The German-American Plot, the Record of a Great Failure: The Campaign to Capture the Sympathy and Support of the United States
ON November 6, 1914, at the end of eight weeks spent in the United States immediately after the outbreak of the war, it was my privilege to describe before the festive spirits who comprise the American Luncheon Club of London some aspects of the world crisis on the peaceful side of the globe. My little talk ended as follows: Knowing Germany as I do; knowing her plans, her strength, and her ambitions, I have more than once uttered to myself during the last three months a silent prayer than some contingency might arise whereby we of the United States could wade into this fight for I am as convinced as I am that we are gathered here to-day that the vital interests of America are bound up with the cause of the fighting Allies.
