Description
The experimental basis upon which Dalton founded his generalization was, however, meagre and, from a modern stand point, quite inaccurate - as was the case also with the evidence upon the strength of which he put forth his Law of Multiple Proportions and the original Atomic Hypothesis. The work done upon this subject by Dalton and gay-lussac - and es pecially by the latter, - the results of which were published in 1802, forms an epoch in the history of the careful study of the properties of gases, if for no other reason than because of the recognition of the necessity for the thorough removal of water vapor from the gas examined, before concurrent results could be expected.
