Description
On 18th April 1944 a lone German Ju 188 bomber appeared in broad daylight over the Isle of Wight where it was soon subjected to anti-aircraft fire and shot down by RAF Typhoon fighters over the Solent. The stricken Luftwaffe aircraft crashed on the mainland near Exbury House, then a naval headquarters involved in D-Day planning. Witnesses wondered why the German plane had entered such a sensitive area in daylight and not attemped to defend itself. The mystery deepened when seven bodies were retrieved from the wreckage instead of the expected crew of four. Who were all these men and what was their mission?
