The special significance of those words that express the ideals of Roman charac ter (and the ideals of all character), words which we have preserved in our translation into English - grav ity, soberness, probity, honesty, self-restraint, austerity, considerateness, modesty, patriotism - impresses his mind deeply as a result of long-continued study of Roman literature and history.
