It was Hendrik Hamel, with his crew Of Dutchmen, shipwrecked in 1653 Off the coast of Corea, on a trading voyage to Japan, who first drew Europe''s atten tion to the little-known peninsula. Little, however, occurred to quicken that atten tion during the next two centuries, and it was not until the unfortunate country became the storm-centre of the Far East, providing the casus bellz'' for two of the greatest wars of modern times (between China and Japan, 1894 - 5, and Russia and Japan, 1904 that its name became really familiar to European ears.
