He often realizes that the spelling problem is complicated, that there are various factors Cooperating to pro duce the results that concern us, and that the situa tion should be examined more critically than it ever has been; and yet he is almost if not quite helpless to do anything about it. He must go ahead and teach the day''s lesson the best he can, according to the light that has come to him from One source or another - mainly the traditional belief in the way the child learns. In this respect it is no more different with spelling than it is with all the other subjects in the program.
