Description
Clinton had the task of moving his army and baggage from Philadelphia to New York by way of New Jersey. Many of the soldiers and artillery pieces had been taken by ship prior to his departure from Philadelphia but the shortage of ships necessitated this overland march. Included in the train were many camp followers, wives, and Tories (loyalists to the British cause). The British Army also had the services of the Hessians (germans) who were hired by the British for their great military abilities.
