The Translation of Tfie Birds of Aristophanes which, with Introduction and Notes, appears in this volume, is the outgrowth of Lectures delivered by me as Greek Professor in this University. When I first thought of printing it, my chief motive was that, by dedicating it to your father, I might express the value I set on the constant friendship with which he had honoured me from our College days. But it was not ordered that he should see this expression of my feel ing. His illustrious life was brought to a close within the first weeks of 1873 and to me, his elder in age by a few months, it was left to say mournfully, ''i prae sequan''
