Description
The Art-Journal Illustrated Catalogue is the standard pictorial record of the Great Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, held in the Crystal Palace, London, in 1851. Issued by The Art-Journal and dedicated to Prince Albert, it surveys the manufactures and works of art shown by exhibitors from across the world: silver and goldsmiths' work, furniture, ceramics, glass, textiles, carpets, ironwork, sculpture and ornament. Hundreds of finely executed steel engravings are accompanied by descriptive and critical commentary, together with essays on the exhibition and on design. A primary source for the history of Victorian decorative arts and of industrial design. Faithful facsimile reprint of the edition published in London for the proprietors by George Virtue, 1851.
