Description
The Angel of Comical Corner was written by Francis Daniel at the end of the 19th Century inspired by his experiences when he was a landlord in South Shields close to Comical Corner.
It is a remarkable story which captures what life was like to be desperately poor in South Shields. There are descriptions of drink fuelled violence, prostitution, poverty and yet also hilarious episodes where the local language and humour is perfectly captured.
The book was very popular and was turned into a play where it broke all records when it was performed at the Theatre Royal in King Street in 1914.
