It is some 400 miles in length and 170 in width, but of very irregular shape. The total area is over square miles, or a little less than that of Ireland. There are, a number of dependent islets, some of considerable size but of little value to day, though a few thousand people manage to eke out a precarious exist: ence on the island of Gonave in the bay of port-au-prince.
