In France, a title given to all who devoted themselves to divinity, or pursued a course of study in a theological seminary, in the hope that the king would confer on them an abbey, that is, a certain part of the revenues of a monastery. The name is also applied to persons holding a semi-clerical position in other R. C. Coun tries.
Abbess, ab''bes. The female governor of a convent or nunnery, who must be 40 years of age, and 8 years a nun.
