Mr. Hugo Becket sat in his office In Chancery Lane, waiting for a visitor. The office smelt of dust and leather, and stored papers almost ?avorous. A small fire burned in the grate, chewing smokily a single lump of coal. Mr. Becket walked over to it and lifted his coat-tails, giving an uneasy glance at the window, as if in reluctant reproach of it, because it did not frame the figure of Mr. Edward Monypenny panting to his appointment, now passed by thirteen minutes exactly.
