This is the second book on the history of the ambulance service in Sussex penned by Brian Janman, and it's a testament to the sheer volume of research he's undertaken over the years. In my experience, much of our history and heritage has been chucked onto the scrap heap, so having this on record is a breath of fresh air.

Now, the ambulance service as we know it—a uniformly organized and entirely free service—kicked off on the 5th of July, 1948, courtesy of the 1946 National Health Service Act. Since then, it’s been on a relentless journey of development and improvement, trying to keep up with the ever-increasing demands placed upon it. Before this, ambulances were cobbled together by various means and organizations, and this book traces those fascinating local developments as the service evolved.

We owe them a debt of gratitude.
