Description
The Tonic Sol-fa method is more commonly recognized as the Sol-Feg system in which notes are articulated with the syllables: doh-ray-me-fah-so-lah-te-doh. While Curwen did not invent this method, he adapted it and made it widely available for use in music education via his publications and extensive attempts to educate others. The system is primarily used as an easily teachable method for sight reading music, but Curwen also hoped that it would provide a superior method of musical notation, allowing composition to spread to a more general audience and thus create a larger field of composers and musicians. Curwen's adaptations of the Tonic Sol-fa method are applicable in a music education context, assisting students to better articulate rhythm and pitch.
Studies in Worship Music: First Series is an fascinating book written by a master musician, John Spencer Curwen, but intended for a general audience, unlike most other publications of the same time. Providing a complete overview of the Tonic Sol-fa method, this text can aid any teacher or student of music when applied to the teaching or learning of rhythm, pitch, and composition. Whether you're a musician who wants to learn more about the Tonic Sol-fa method, a scholar in music theory, or a general reader who is curious about the impressive musical figure of John Spencer Curwen, this book is for you.
